Most calls in a political environment happen quickly, and with little preparation. But occasionally, you will find yourself with an unusual freedom — the freedom to prepare. This occurs whenever you have a pre-scheduled phone call, video meeting, or in-person meeting. In these circumstances, taking a few minutes to prepare yourself can mean the difference between a well-crafted ask and a disappointing finish.

  1. Google the prospect. Learn what you can from the first few webpages.
  2. Look at LinkedIn. What do they do? What was their major? What boards are listed?
  3. Get mentally prepared for the meeting. Arrive early if it's on location. Allow 5-10 minutes to get in a good mental headspace. Rehearse your talking points out loud to yourself.
